Intactivist: Tug Ahoy creator Dr. James Haughey

by Tally on May 12, 2010

Figure 9B for Dr. Haughey's Tug Ahoy foreskin restoration device patentLast week I wrote about the inventor of the Tug Ahoy Dr. James Haughey. He  received United States Patent Number 6,579,227 for his Tug Ahoy foreskin restoration device. A pdf file of the patent is available here or it can be viewed at the US Patent and Trademark Office (PTO) website.

In his patent, Dr. Haughey takes a hard position against infant circumcision. James Haughey is a medical doctor that calls infant circumcision male genital mutilation. The section below is from the background section of the patent: Read more . . .

Intactivism: Week in Review May 8, 2010

by Tally on May 8, 2010

Genital mutilation of any child (boy or girl) is wrong!Say no to circumcision - support intactivism. The following list includes blogs, articles, and websites of interest to Intactivists that were published in the past week. This is a running tally of the ones I found interesting.

The big news this week was the newly revised Policy Statement by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) "Ritual Genital Cutting of Female Minors." The policy advocates for allowing female genital "nicking." It also renames female genital mutilation (FGM) to female genital cutting (FGC) because it is less threatening. Read more . . .

Patent: Tug Ahoy foreskin restoration device

by Tally on May 5, 2010

Tug Ahoy foreskin restoration device to become uncircumcisedThe Tug Ahoy was a popular foreskin restoration device introduced around 2000. The Tug Ahoy was invented by Dr. James A. Haughey and patented in 2003. Dr. Haughey was a medical doctor who returned to school to become a biomedical engineer. He was a man of many talents, including inventor. Unfortunately, James passed away in January 2009 at age 69.

The Tug Ahoy was one of the first tapeless devices sold for restoring the foreskin. Because of Dr. Haughey's death the Tug Ahoy is no longer being marketed. Its popularity and use is waning and other tapeless tuggers have stepped up to fill the gap. The Tug Ahoy website at TugAhoy.com is unavailable, although a copy of the website is available on the Wayback Machine. His website had the famous milk jug picture, which shows two 1-gallon milk jugs as weights for the Tug Ahoy. James demonstrated his tugging device at NORM-SoCal meetings, where he was an active member. Read more . . .

Idiot America: How Stupidity Became a Virtue in the Land of the Free

by Tally on April 24, 2010

Idiot America: How Stupidity Became a Virtue in the Land of the FreeI do not consider myself an intellectual, although I am educated. I have an engineering degree. I read on many diverse topics. I attempt to learn one new thing every day. I may listen to the opinions of others, but I am typically skeptical and do not blindly believe everything I hear and see.

But, when I look around me, I sometimes think that I am the only one not swimming in the shallow end of the gene pool. The world around me seems to be filled with idiots. Fortunately, I am not the only one that has this same feeling.

The book, Idiot America: How Stupidity Became a Virtue in the Land of the Free, is a humorous look at the dumbing down of America. We see it all around us. Death panels will put old folks to death. The end of civilization is near because the President is doing, or not doing, something. Conspiracy theories abound. Read more . . .

Information Overload Syndrome - IOS

by Tally on April 16, 2010

Information overload syndrome - IOS: a leading cause of burnoutWith the advent of the Internet and pocket sized computing devices, we are inundated with information. We can work 24/7. We can look up all kinds of useless information. We can follow the daily lives of celebrities and other people for no reason whatsoever. We can drive down the freeway with a cell phone held up to one ear and a laptop computer on the seat beside us, while we are looking at a notebook. Read more . . .

Back Pain: How I made the pain stop

by Tally on April 7, 2010

Treat your Own Back by Doctor Robin McKenzie I have lifted weights for most of my life. I always try to use proper form in all my lifts. I consider this very important because there was one time when I did not. About 20 years ago I worked out in the mornings with a coworker. On one particular morning we were working legs.

We had not done deadlifts before. I had read up on them and thought I knew how to do them. Unfortunately, I had too much weight on the bar for my first attempt. Even though I was in fairly good shape, the combination of too much weight and unfamiliarity with the exercise was a bad combination. Halfway up I felt a sharp stabbing pain in my back. I tried to finish the lift but it was all I could do to lower it to the platform. To make matters worse, my friend easily deadlifted it right after me.

I knew I had done something to my back. I gritted my teeth and finished a very light workout. I made it home, took a shower, and realized that I could not move very well. I collapsed in bed, face down, and stayed that way for the rest of the day. Read more . . .
