We have the power to make a difference

by Tally on April 5, 2010 Bookmark and Share

I came across this video on Facebook and found it very powerful.

As I began watching the video, I did not know what to think of it. Towards the end I grokked the message. I got shivers up and down my body as I finished watching the video. The video is right. We do have the power.

YouTube Video: Superpower Promo - Exploring the Extraordinary Power of the Internet - BBC

Even though the video is an advertisement for a television program, the video provides a strong message on its own. At no time in human history have the people had access to so much information. At no time in human history have the people had the ability to speak out and be heard by so many.

I am an intactivist. I strongly believe in everyone's autonomy. Every person should be permitted to choose what happens to their body. Male infant circumcision takes away the male's right to his personal autonomy. An infant's circumcision removes the choice for that person to decide what happens to his body. It removes his choice to remain whole, just the way he was born.

As I fight against infant circumcision, I tend to rely on the Internet. The Internet allows everyone to have a voice, provided that they have access to a connected computer. For example, this blog gives me a voice that is currently heard by more than 3000 visitors per month. Everyone who comments on one of my posts will be heard by some fraction of those visitors to the blog. At only 3000 vistors per month, I have a small voice on the Internet. I multiply my voice by posting on other blogs and forums. By doing so my voice is heard by many more than just those that come here.

Thanks to the Internet, we have the power to change the world. We, each one of us, have a voice. It is only up to us to use it.

Ha! I got the shivers as well. Great video, I was thinking it was headed in the 'aliens' direction. Love it!
