The Guardian: Newborn babies should not be given sugar as pain relief, says study
Study finds that sucrose pacifiers often given to babies during infant circumcision do not relieve pain. Instead, the sugar pacifiers only mask the facial expression of pain. Use of the pacifiers gives parents the false impression that the baby feels no pain from his circumcision, which is the cutting off of the most sensitive part of the male body.

The difference in the expression of the baby before and after the circumcision shows the pain the baby endured. The baby was also given a sucrose pacifier, which has been found to not offer any pain relief.

A reminder to doctors that the baby is the patient, not the parent. Male infant circumcision should only be done when medically indicated, not just because the parents desire it as cosmetic surgery.
