Intactivism: June 2013 in Review

by Tally on June 30, 2013 Bookmark and Share

Intactivists marking as Foreskin Pride Parents, protect your babies. Support intactivism. The following list includes blogs, articles, and websites of interest to Intactivists that were published in the past month. This is a running tally of the ones I found interesting.

June saw a lot of pride parades across the United States. Many intactivists took advantage of these various events to help get the word out that the male foreskin is a valuable body part and it is wrong to circumcise baby boys to remove the foreskin. I applaud all these intactivists for their efforts. Through them, we will change the cutting culture in the United States.

YouTube Video: Circumcision: The Whole Story
Dr. Christopher Guest of CHHRP.org discusses the history of circumcision, medical myths surrounding it, and the function and anatomy of the intact penis. The video is a powerful resource tool for prenatal education. Intact America named Dr. Christopher Guest as their Intactivist of the Month for July 2013.

Beyond the Bris: My Jewish Heritage was Key to Unlocking the American Secret
A Jewish woman tells of growing up and attending many a bris. She did not think anything of it, trusting in the adults. As she grew up, though, she grew reflective on the circumcision rite. She is currently working on her first documentary, American Secret: The Circumcision Agenda. She has successfully funded the documentary on KickStarter.

Saving Our Sons: To the (Happily) Circumcised American Man
An open letter to circumcised men. Many men are happy with their circumcised penis -- either by being indifferent to the fact that they were circumcised, by not being aware of the change to their favorite body part, or by denying that they were harmed by infant circumcision. The letter writer presents facts and information to educate these men about what happened to them. It is a difficult subject to broach with many men. The author does an admirable job of it, though.

Slate: The Unkindest Cut?
The Gentleman Scholar attempts to answer the circumcision question from a reader calling himself Cut and Numb. Although using a cliche title and giving a tongue-in-cheek answer, the Gentleman Scholar does provide reasons why male infant circumcision should not be done. For example, the AAP used irrelevant data to reach its recent conclusion. In particular, the AAP relied upon studies that blatantly advocated male circumcision of African men. It is needless to say that the cultural practices differ widely between the United States and Africa. Unfortunately, the Gentleman Scholar bashes intactivists in an effort at some wry humor.

James Pate, MD: We do NOT want to cut your beautiful baby boy!
Doctor Pate answers a question from a medical student who wants to be an OB/GYN. The student is morally opposed to male infant circumcision. Doctor Pate prefers to be loud and proud about his belief that male infant circumcision needs to stop being done by doctors.

Aroused Woman Radio: Trish Causey Discusses Circumcision With Georganne Chapin
Georganne Chapin, Executive Director of Intact America, is interviewed. She talks about the dangers of male infant circumcision. She identifies some of the side effects of infant circumcision, including healing complications, neurological issues, and the increase in potential for erectile dysfunction (ED) later in life.

Beyond the Bris: Our Covenant Is With Our Son: My Family's Take on Jewish Circumcisions
A Jewish mother tells of attending an infant's brit. The boy was in visible pain from being cut by the mohel. The boy's mother looked on nervously, a bewildered smile frozen on her face. The boy's father grimaced during the ceremony. Yet they let the unnecessary penis cutting continue.

ScienceNordic: Circumcised women uncritical of the ritual
An interesting article that explores the reasons and biases driving female genital mutilation (FGM). Many circumcised women insist on circumcising their own daughters, even after moving to the West. The number one  reason is to pass on identity. The reasons sound familiar to those given for circumcising baby boys. Maybe the sex of the child has nothing to do with cutting the genitalia of children.

Beyond the Bris: Jewish Activist Speaks on Metzitzah B'Peh Circumcision Practice
Social activist Jonathan Friedman is featured on a new YouTube video discussing the Orthodox brit milah procedure he endured as an eight day old infant. He tells of how it has impacted his life, including his sexual life.

A Voice for Men: Interview with an Intactivist in Kenya
The Intact Network has a chapter in Kenya. The Kenyan man comes from a non-circumcising African tribe. He is seeking to help educate Kenyans about the harms of male circumcision. His efforts are stymied by the well-funded circumcision advocates. He fears that the HIV rate in Kenya will soon rise because too many believe the propaganda that male circumcision protects against HIV. But condoms must still be used and there is evidence that women are at increased risk of getting HIV from circumcised partners.

Barrel of Oranges: Silencing male victims of genital mutilation
Males who were subjected to male infant circumcision are silenced in our society. For example, one way is that many do not like to use the term mutilation, such as in male genital mutilation, although that term is widely used and accepted for female genital mutilation (FGM). In any dictionary, circumcision meets the definition of mutilation.
