Intactivism: April 2013 in Review
Intact America is preparing for a New Orleans protest outside the annual convention of the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). Intact America will be sponsoring a sidewalk demonstration in New Orleans on Saturday, May 4, 2013, at the annual convention of the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. The image to the right is the Intact America logo for this protest and is being used by many on Facebook. The ACOG convention is the largest assemblage of baby-cutters under one roof. During this one-day event, intactivist will be protesting the role of obstetricians in perpetrating circumcision in American hospitals.
The picture below shows the mobile billboard that will traverse the streets of New Orleans on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. It is just one more way Intact America gets the word out that male infant circumcision is harmful. Baby boys need to be protected. It is, after all, his body and his rights.
Parents, protect your babies. Support intactivism. The following list includes blogs, articles, and websites of interest to Intactivists that were published in the past month. This is a running tally of the ones I found interesting.
Should I circumcise?: Circumcision and Trauma
Infant circumcision is traumatic. Why is that controversial? Trauma is defined as an event that the person experiences where they feel a lack of control and fear that their life is in danger. It is also accompanied by a state of heightened central nervous system arousal, a fight or flight type response. This describes what happens when a baby has part of his most sensitive organ cut off.
Some Things Are Hard To Say: I don't Know Why I was Circumcised: Chad's Story
Chad tells of how he never thought of his circumcision until he was about to be a father of a son. He then wondered what his foreskin would have looked like if he had not been circumcised. He knew, absolutely, that his son was going to be born whole and remain that way. His son was going to remain intact with his whole penis. There was no need for a circumcision.
Circumcision Diaries: Hurt egos, the collateral damage of circumcision
There is no way to discuss circumcision without someone getting hurt feelings. It may be the mother who cut her son. It may be the man who never thought about his circumcised penis. When circumcision harm is discussed, someone will not like it and take it like a personal attack or insult. This post addresses the impact of circumcision discussions on those who get upset by the discussion.
ISRN Urology: Sexually Transmitted Infections and Male Circumcision: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Robert S. Van Howe of the Department of Pediatrics and Human Development, Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, reviews studies to determine the effects of male circumcision on various sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). "Chlamydia, gonorrhea, genital herpes, and human papillomavirus are not significantly impacted by circumcision. Intact men appear to be of greater risk for genital ulcerative disease while at lower risk for genital discharge syndrome, nonspecific urethritis, genital warts, and the overall risk of any sexually transmitted infection. In studies of general populations, there is no clear or consistent positive impact of circumcision on the risk of individual sexually transmitted infections. Consequently, the prevention of sexually transmitted infections cannot rationally be interpreted as a benefit of circumcision, and any policy of circumcision for the general population to prevent sexually transmitted infections is not supported by the evidence in the medical literature."
Kickstarter: A People Without A Land
Eliyahu Ungar-Sargon successfully raised funding for his feature-length documentary, A People Without a Land, that challenges the conventional wisdom about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The Kickstarter page has a trailer for the film.
Foregen: Foregen and the Future: A New Direction
Three years ago Foregen was created to promote foreskin regeneration and sponsor research furthering foreskin regeneration. In mid-April, Foregen announced that it was going to form a for profit company to do its own research. This is a complete about-face for the company, moving from being a conduit for the multitude of circumcised men to the entities capable of doing regeneration research to being a company hoping to do their own research.
Genital Autonomy: The Midwife’s Tale
A video interview of Midwife Mary Cronk M.B.E. She tells of her experiences as a midwife from the mid nineteen fifties when male circumcision was much more common in the United Kingdom.
Genital Autonomy Canada: Attorneys for the Rights of the Child addresses the legal and human rights implications of non-consensual genital cutting in Canada
A letter to the Canadian Paediatric Society detailing the reasons male infant circumcision violates the child's human rights. Teh open letter asks the CPS to "take a forward-looking approach to the boy-child’s human rights that is consistent with the growing worldwide opinion that parental proxy consent for non-therapeutic genital cutting of non-consenting minor males lacks justification in human rights, medical ethics, and the law."
