Intactivism: Week in Review July 24, 2010
Support genital integrity -No more circumcision. The following list includes blogs, articles, and websites of interest to Intactivists that were published in the past week. This is a running tally of the ones I found interesting.
The news this week is that the International AIDS Conference was held in Vienna, Austria. Unfortunately, too many are calling male circumcision a proven measure to combat HIV. But, there has not been any followup studies to "prove" that male circumcision has any impact on HIV infection rates. With all the men that have already been circumcised in Africa, evidence of the efficacy of male circumcision with respect to the HIV rate should be readily available. The evidence for any "proven" method should be mounting. The absence of such evidence is telling.

A Brooklyn federal judge has awarded $10 million to the victim of a circumcision gone wrong, leaving his man parts "partially amputated." The Huffington Post: Monumental AIDS Breakthrough -- Or Is It?
Investing Contrarian: John R. Talbott: Monumental AIDS Breakthrough — Or Is It?
A realistic look at how statistics are being manipulated to show that there is hope for combating the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Africa. The latest is a gel that is touted as having a 39% reduction in female HIV infections. The author points out that this is a short term reduction and sexual behavior continues year after year, encounter after encounter. The new gel is being played up just like the circumcision trials are to show that UNAIDS and the WHO are making progress when they really are not. If these treatments are so good, it should be easy to show real world reductions. Where are those studies?
End of Line: Circumcision: Choosing Elective Surgery
Any non-medical circumcision done to newborns is done without the child’s consent. It is an elective surgery that the child did not elect to have. Regardless of any supposed benefit, infant circumcision is not necessary for the health of any baby.

#1 "Time to Halt the UNAids Gravy Train"
Hey Tally.
Have you seen this yet?
This article argues that HIV/AIDS isn't the problem UNAIDS and UNICEF etc. are trying to make it out to be, it's actually been going down since the 1990s, condoms and education HAVE been working, and that their efforts to downplay them and ramp up gel and circumcision stem from a desire to look busy and justify their existence.
Are self-interested circumcision advocates taking advantage of organizations struggling to appear essential to AIDS donors?
Are "philanthropists" like Bill Clinton, Bill Gates and Annie Lennox really interested in humanity? Or are they merely using "AIDS Charity Funds" as personal non-taxed bank-accounts for their own personal gain?
Is this whole effort to get more AIDS/HIV funds just another gravy train operation that certain interested individuals benefit from? Are well-meaning donors and naive Africans being taken advantage of?
We need to keep a close eye on struggling HIV/AIDS organizations. They may be the key to pro-circumcisionists' undoing.

#2 UNAIDS has to much influence
@Joseph4GI, good point. The article What do AIDS activists want more money for? supports your point. The HIV/AIDS epidemic is of lesser magnitude than other problems in third world countries. But, funds and resources for addressing these other problems are being diverted to the HIV/AIDS programs. Rather than having a cohesive health program, there are now special interest groups, such as UNAIDS, that are driving funding and resources toward programs that benefit the special interest groups.
